Another HID Kit

Well with the New Beetle we've decided to instal a HID headlight kit again. This is due to how good the kit was on the last Beetle we owned, and if your worried about the MOT and HIT kits we had no problem at all with our kit from Autobulbs Direct. So I'm ordering the same kit again from them the HIDS4U Pro Plus 35W HID Converstion Kit and since last time it's actualy come down in price we paid £120 last time and now the kit is under £100 at £97.86 inc VAT.

The New Beetle is a H1 headlight but HID kits are available in nearly every headlight bulb size to see click here.

New Beetle V5 Sport

Well Saturday we picked up our New Beetle, the V5 Sport and I'm really impressed with it the V5 has a lovely warble to it and pulls through the gears really well. A massive plus for us with the Beetle is the ISOFIX it comes as standard with them and with the leather seats any accidents that happen should just wipe clean!

First thing that happened as soon as we got it home was a good clean and rub over with paint cleanser to get rid of the marks it had picked up from being near a tree. The alloy wheels came up like new and have no kerbs or scratches and the BBS Delta's which is a bonus!

It's going to a friend's body shop for a bit of a tidy up at the front to get rid of the stone chips it's picked up but once its back it will look like new. Then i think we will upgrade the headlight bulbs to H1 osram night breaker's or try the H1 Ring Xenon Max or maybe even go for a H1 HID kit like we had on our last Beetle.

The VRS is going

We'll Charlie has decided she can't get on with the VRS any longer it's never been the love of her life and she regretted selling her New Beetle 1.8T Colour Concept to get it.

Don't get me wrong the Skoda Fabia VRS is a fantastic car it does esactly what it says on the tin and more. I know I'm the one thats been driving it for the last 6 months and I've really enjoyed it!

So your asking what has she decided to change the Fabia VRS for???

A New Beetle again! Ah but not any New Beetle she spotted a 53 reg V5 Sport with less than 35k on the clock for just a bit more than the trade in value of the VRS.

The V5 Sport is 170bhp silver and comes with full two tone leather sports seats. Oh and it has ISOFIX which is great considering we have a 3 month old!

So this means I'll be back in my MK5 Golf GT TDI and this blog well I think I'll keep it going with what we get up to with the Golf and the Beetle.

New Brakes

Well the VRS has gone into Midland VW for a set of new disks and pads on the front. I've gone for a straight replacement of the standard VAG disks and pads rather than upgrade as the standards do a very good job of stopping the VRS.

Happy with my Night Breakers

I'm so glad I upgraded the VRS's healights with Osram Night Breaker they make such a difference this time of year with the poor weather and dark mornings and evenings.

The Night Breaker have been on the VRS since the end of Jan and I've had no issues with them. With them being so bright i was worried that other drivers might have issues with them but i've had no one flash me thinking my lights are on full beam.

If you are looking to upgrade you light bulbs i cant recommend the Osram Night Breaker enough.

50k Inspection Service

Well the Fabia went though it's 50k inspection service with flying colours!

Midland VW had the Fabia first thing Saturday morning and by lunchtime it was ready to be picked up :)

Only thing it needed was a new bulb for the reg plate :) I also had all the wiper blades replaced as the old ones had stopped cleaning the screen as well.

I wanted the wipers to look different to the standard ones so i upgraded to the Bosch Aerotwin wiper blades. They look like the Aero blades on my MK5 Golf :) and make the car just a little bit more modern looking.

I also had the tracking checked and adjusted I tend to have this done every so often as i had a real issue with my Golf that had the tracking out straight from the factory and caused excessive tyre wear.

SEAT PD160 Intake and Jetex drop in filter on Fabia VRS

I'm really pleased with the performance of the VRS since fitting the PD 160 and Jetex drop in filter. The power is smoother through the gears and i've noticed a slight increase in mpg which is always good with the price of fuel at the minute.

VMaxx Coilovers four months on

Well the VMaxx coilovers have now been on the VRS for four months. After fitting the coilovers in March I had nothing but good things to say about them, four months down the line I'm still as happy with them.

The Ride.
Over all the ride is as comfortable as the standard suspension you do feel pot holes in the road more so be warned if you like to drive down the road ignoring the pot holes coilovers are not for you. but if you want a firm comfortable ride then I'd say its good money well spent. The standard suspension on the VRS is not good enough for the power of the engine in my opinion anyway.

The handling of the car is a lot better than the standard suspension cornering the car holds the road better not wallowing and feeling a hell of a lot firmer, I feel confident when cornering and taking islands at average speed the the cars not going to suddenly flick out on me.

The Looks
I'm still really pleased with the look of the VRS on the coilovers it looks squat and people still double take when it goes past. Yes it's a Skoda but it buts a smile on my face when you see kids walk past saying "look at that cool car".

Conclusion
Over all I'm really impressed with the quality and performance of what many consider an entry level set of coilovers. Yes you can go out and spend serious money on a set of coilovers but take into consideration how long your going to keep the car and what you use the car for. If like me you just want the car to look good and to increase the handling performance of your car the the VMaxx coilovers are a very good upgrade. If your looking to take you car on the track then it might be worth investing more but I'd have a chat with your local specialist. The first thing I do before any upgrade is to go have a chat with Jody at Midland VW and ask his op pinion and he'll be honest and tell me if its worth the money.

Skoda Motorsport join Oreca

Skoda Motorsport, based at Mlada Boleslav in the Czech republic, has joined forces with French motorsport development company Oreca to work on the development of the Czech manufacturer’s new car for the FIA World Rally Championship.

Under the terms of the agreement between the two organisations Oreca will work in conjunction with Skoda Motorsport on the development of the aerodynamics and engine for the Fabia S2000 model.

Diesel prices are getting beyond a joke!

Well I filled up our Fabia vRS this morning at our local ESSO petrol station and looked up at the price of the diesel £1.18.9 a litre! Now the vRS has a 45 litres tank capacity which means it's now costing me over £53.50 to fill up a if completely empty!!! How much longer can this go on the way the price of fuel is going could cause major issues for the economy because if it's costing so much to fill up your car just to get to work etc. then your not going to have the money to spend on other goods especially luxury goods!

I was listening to the radio on the way to work the other day and they had a business specialist on who said that they are predicting the cost of diesel will rise to £1.50 a litre by September 2008. That will mean running a small car that can do over 400 miles to a tank of diesel will cost over £65 to fill up and my Golf GT TDI which has a 55 litre tank will cost over £80 to fill up.

Role on the fuel strikes again I say this country is spiraling out of control!!!

Samco Developing turbo kit for the Fabia VRS

I've been interested in replacing the existing hoses to the turbo so contacted Samco to see if they had any that could be used on the Fabia vRS.

Mark at Samco replied back within hours of me filling in there contact for to inform me that they have a kit in development for the Fabia vRS!

The kit will consist of three hoses:

Hard Pipe - Inlet Manifold

Intercooler - Hard Pipe

Turbo Hard Pipe - Intercooler inlet

The kits will hopefully be available within the next month so watch this space as it could be our next mod!

Fitted SEAT PD 160 Intake and drop in filter

Well I went with the Jetex filter in the end for two reasons, one I had a real job ordering a Green Cotton filter I tried through the website but it was having none of it. Secondly i went for Jetex because I've used there filters for the last five years with no problems at all.

The trumpet and intake pipe off the PD 160 SEAT Ibiza are a five minute job to fit to the Fabia vRS all you need is a Philips and a flat head screwdriver.

Remove your battery cover and engine cover to give yourself more room. Then unscrew the Philips head screw situated near the air filter box. You can the work out the pipe from the air box, then using a flat headed screwdriver pop the trumpet out of the holding case attached to the front grill (I slid the screwdriver between the trumpet and case and worked it out.

I then worked the new pipe into the air box you cant get it in wrong as the hole for the screw needs to be facing up. Then push in the new trumpet and work the end of the pipe onto the trumpet. This can be a little awkward but it will go. Finally screw the Philips screw back in and your done!

I had a little more trouble with the drop in filter (what i hear you say???). Well i can recommend that if your going to do this do it before you fit a SEAT strut bar, the reason being it hinders access to the Phillips screw at the back right hand side of the air box.

Once I got that screw out it was a straight forward remove the old filter and drop in the Jetex filter job done!

I've taken the Fabia out for a spin, it usually takes the engine management system a couple of miles to realise that there is more air being pulled in through the air intake, but once it does the car became smoother and more responsive.

For the money around £50 for the pipe and trumpet and £35 for the filter its a great easy mod.

Time for some Fabia vRS Tuning

Well other than the SEAT Leon front splitter and the car going into our friendly body shop for colour coding and badge deletion, there's not a lot else I want to do to the style of the vRS I don't like taking a car to far style wise.

So now it's time for some work under the bonnet. The first easy modification to make to a vRS is to fit the PD 160 induction trumpet and hose of the SEAT Ibiza Cupra 160 this has been proven to give gains and help the engine breath better. I'm also going to drop in an after market filter and it's a choice between the Green Cotton Filter and the Jetex filter.

I'm looking at these two in particular firstly because I've been running a Jetex drop in filter in my Golf GT TDI for the last two years with no issues. The Green Cotton filter has had good reviews from other vRS owners so I'm interested in giving it a try.

So I’m going to give the Green Cotton filter a go and see what the results are. I may pop up Midland VW and get a before and after rolling road to show the full results of the upgrade. Check back for the results in the next few weeks.

V-Maxx UK Website - Skoda Fabia vRS Feature

The vRS goes from strenght to strength out there on the web. After exchanging a few emails with the guys at V-Maxx here in the UK they were good enough to put a photo of my Skoda Fabia vRS onto their new UK website in their online gallery area.

Skoda vRS in Max Power

Fabia vRS Coilovers & Alloy Wheel Upgrade

This weekend saw the fitting of the V-Maxx coilovers and TSW Deep Dish alloy wheels.

Initial reports and feelings from this are that I am very pleased with the finished result of the car. The coilovers have produced a good stance on the vRS and the ride has not suffered considerably. The ride is now firm without being jaw shattering which is often the case with cheaper coilovers.

The coilvers were purchased direct from V-Maxx here in the UK. They have been working hard to get these coilovers into UK distribution as they have been huge in Europe for several years. The wheels were a difficult choice. I was after something that would give the car the Euro look that its badge heritage deserved to stay close to. I didn't want to go bigger than 17s due to tyre cost when replacing them long term. Queue a visit to the TSW website.

Fitting of Seat Strut Brace to Skoda Fabia vRS

I have now fitted a Seat Leon strut brace to the front of the Skoda Fabia vRS. The fitting went as follows:-

Tools Required = 10mm spanner & 13mm spanner

Step by Step Instructions

Remove the vaccum accumilator (Black unit) which is held in with 3*10mm nuts, then gently ease this to the side. Then disconnect the plug that fits into the cooling system bottle.

Undo the 2 tops bolts and remove fully from the drivers side (Off Side). 2*13mm bolts.

Undo the 2 tops bolts and remove fully from the passenger side (Near Side). 2*13mm bolts.

Place the brace across the rear near the bulk head but remember to feed the cable under the brace otherwise the brace will not fit.

Replace the vaccum accumilator (Black unit) which is held in with 3*10mm nuts. Then reconnect the plug that fits into the cooling system bottle.

I would welcome feedback via email from anyone running the Seat strut brace or the Forge or MOMO versions so that we can compare feedback.

It is important to keep an eye on oil levels on the vRS as diesels go through their oil a lot quicker than petrol performance cars. You must use an oil which meets specification VW 505 01. The following oils are approved to that specification:

Fabia vRS Fuel Filler Flap

At the weekend I noticed that the fuel filler flap on the Fabia vRS wasn't shutting home properly. At first I was about to call our independent VW/Audi/Skoda specialst Midland VW to order a replacement spring when I had a thought that it may be something I could fix myself. I knew that we had taken part of the boot liner out when changing the vRS rear bulbs and I wondered if the spring mechanism had become loose.

So before doing anything else I pulled back the boot carpet trim and had a look at the little cable which allows the flap to spring open and flush closed. It had in fact popped out of its housing and all it needed was pushing back into its plastic housing and the wires were hidden again and the flap now sits flush again.

If however this doesnt work, you will need to purchase a new retaining spring which is available from http://www.vagcat.com/ or your local dealer. The part number is 6Y6809857 .

Seat Leon Cupra R Front Splitter

Another purchase was recently made for the Skoda Fabia vRS - the front splitter of a Seat Leon Cupra R. We purchased this off ebay for about £20 and from reading various posts on the Skoda forums that this is a simple modification to do that has a real improvement on the overall look of the Fabia vRS.

Fitting of the front splitter is fairly easy but the part needs cutting in places to fit.

First you will need a mate to help as someone needs to hold the splitter in place while you mark where it fits. A cutting tool and 14 self tapping screws will be needed. Part number for the splitter is 1ML 805 903. The part needs to bend slightly so to stop it from deforming and giving a crease you need to cut 2 small triangles on the corners so that it bends easier.
Next smooth off the top of the 2 lugs in the centre of the splitter - 2mm above the plasic bit that is in them so you can screw them in later on.

Then use some masking tape (and your mate!) to line up the splitter. Ensure you tape it on so you can stand back and ensure its even.

Then drill through the small clips on the splitter into the spoiler - they have a small edge on them so best to file these down first so they are smooth. Screw into the bumper all around the edge. You will need to cut about 3cm off each edge so it sits in front of the mudflap. Finally you'll need to small headed screws (I have heard that you may have to grind some down to fit), screw in the 2 lugs to the bumper. it is advisable to also use some black stickyflex to help adhesion.

Osram Night Breaker +90% 12v 55w Headlight Bulbs

Well the Osram Night Breaker headlight bulbs have been on just over a week and what a difference they have made! Driving at night is no longer a nightmare peering into the darkness with the standard bulbs the Osram Night Breaker +90% 12v 55w light up the road incredibly well without dazzling on coming motorists.

Future vRS Modifications

It seems there's always something else to add to the list of modifications. Currently on the cards for the Fabia vRS is a front strut brace. I have been looking at both the Forge strut brace and also a well known German make called Weichers. Both received good reviews although there is a big difference in price between the two makes. The Weichers one comes in at around £40 and can be purchased painted or as polished metal direct from Dubmeister's online website.

In the new few months the car is booked in for a custom engine re-map at DNA Tuning. DNA offer ECU Tuning by complete experts, all their software is developed to give the smoothest and the most power reliably from your vehicle as well as ultimate performance. I have known John at DNA since he re-mapped my 1.8T New Beetle and he really knows his stuff and provides top quality tuning without compromising any aspect of the car. He already has a custom ECU setup ready for the Fabia vRS.

As soon as this gets put on the car I will post some dyno and performance results.

Fabia vRS Bulb Installation

After ordering the bulbs from Autobulbs Direct earlier in the week we got round to fitting them this weekend. We had purchased Osram Night Breaker +90% 12v 55w bulbs along with 581 Silver Indicators bulbs to get rid of those horrible orange indicators and then because they look great at night LED Side lights (501 Super Bright White).

The rear bulbs were really easy to fit, simply removing the covers off the housing in the boot and the original bulbs were easy to replace. The front ones however were a bit more tricky. On the left hand side there was a real lack of space to get a grip on the wires to pull the current side light bulbs out, and the only way to rectify this was with the use of a pair of pliers and some serious pulling. Luckily the right side wasnt so hard but still difficult to get to if you have large hands! The difference though was well worth it and the car looks much better without orange indicators, and even in daylight you can see the visible difference that the new 501 LED bulbs make.

Fabia vRS Side Strips Removal, Deep Paint Cleanse & Wax

Decided today to remove the awful black rubbing strips that Skoda saw fit to put on the vRS. Armed with a bucket of hot water we set about pouring this over the strips to loosen the glue behind the rubbing strips. After some persuasion from a store account card the strips were prised away from the car coming off fairly easily. The majority of the glue came off but some residue was left behind. I found the best thing for removing this was white spirit so after some intense rubbing the majority of the sticky had come away.

Next it was time to tackle the paint work. The car blatantly hadn't been touched in any way for at least 4 years apart from with a bucket and sponge. So it was time to dig out the clay bar and get to work with a wash of the car to remove surface dirt, a post rinse of the car to remove suds and then using the detailing spray keep the paintwork moist whilst we worked in the claybar. The car needed some serious TLC as there as a lot of tar, tree sap and swirling under the surface. It took about 2 hours to do the entire car.

Next step was to use Meguiars ScratchX on the paintwork. This isnt something I would use all the time but for extreme detailing once or twice a year it is worth using this sparingly all over the car to remove more stubborn oxidants and swirls. This was followed by Serious Performance Paint Cleanser. This paint cleanser restores depth and colour, and utilises optical brighteners to further enhance the clarity and shine from your paint, prior to sealing with Serious Performance Polymer Super Sealant. After buffing this off it was time for a coat of Serious Performance Polymer Super Sealant this gives the ultimate in gloss and protection. Polymer Super Sealant uses the latest Nano Polymer technology available to create a smoother, richer shine while also giving an incredibly strong bond to the paintwork. The best thing about this product is it can be applied in several layers and for maximum effect left over night and buffed off the following morning for the ultimate wet look finish.

I am waiting on the arrival of my show wax for the season which is Finish Kare 2865 Carnauba Polymer 'Pink' Wax. So for today it was down to Halfords and a quick purchase of Meguiars NXT Paste Wax. Used in conjunction with a sealant the ESP (Engineered Synthetic Polymers) technology creates a tougher polymer bond to your paint so it can provide extreme protection. Initial thoughts on this wax are that it produces a nice gloss finish but nowhere deep enough for my liking after one application, its quick to apply though and a great one to use as a detailing bag staple for when its a quick wash n' wax. The car now feels like silk to touch, I can't wait to use the deep carnauba wax above in March to give it a proper slick finish.

Fabia vRS - s2000 aerial upgrade

First thing that needed changing on the vRS was the hideous remote control car aerial that it comes with. From previous cars (the 1.8T Beetle and the MKV Golf) I knew that the S2000 stubby aerial was a good fit with no loss of reception. The Skoda Fabia vRS aerial was tough to get off and required a good pull to remove it finally from its housing, installation of the new S2000 style aerial was simple and a vast improvement. On checking the stereo all FM/AM and MW stations were still picked up with good clarity.
